Ford VIN Decoder

Free Ford VIN decoder — F-150, Mustang, Bronco, EcoBoost engines.

About Ford

Ford runs more US assembly plants than any other automaker; a Ford VIN reveals which plant built the vehicle, which engine family it carries (EcoBoost, Coyote, PowerStroke), and every open NHTSA recall. CheckMyVIN runs the full lookup in about 30 seconds.

Founded 1903 and headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, Ford vehicles register their VIN data with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When you enter a Ford VIN above, CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA VPIC database directly — pulling the same federally certified specs that the manufacturer reported when the vehicle was sold.

A 17-character VIN is split into three sections: the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) in digits 1–3, the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) in digits 4–9, and the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) in digits 10–17. Ford uses several WMI codes depending on plant and model line — the table below lists the most common.

Ford WMI Codes

WMIMeaning
1FTFord truck — USA
1FAFord passenger car — USA
1FMFord MPV (Explorer, Expedition, Edge) — USA
2FAFord passenger car — Canada
3FAFord passenger car — Mexico
WF0Ford of Europe passenger car — Germany
1FDFord heavy-duty truck (F-450+) — USA

Where to find your Ford VIN

  • Driver-side dashboard, near windshieldStand outside the vehicle on the driver's side and look at the corner of the dashboard where it meets the windshield. The 17-character VIN is engraved on a metal plate visible through the glass.
  • Driver's door jamb stickerOpen the driver's door and look at the door jamb (the frame the door closes against). A federal certification label lists the VIN, tire pressures, and gross vehicle weight rating.
  • Vehicle title, registration & insurance cardThe VIN appears on the title, current registration, and insurance documents. If buying used, cross-check the VIN on the car against every document — any mismatch is a major red flag.

What CheckMyVIN shows for Ford

Every Ford report includes the decoded specifications (engine, drive type, transmission, plant, body class), every open recall NHTSA has on file for the year/model/make combination, an AI-written plain-English summary, and the maintenance specs CheckMyVIN can confidently match by engine code. Tire sizes vary by trim and are always marked "Varies by trim — check door-jamb label" rather than guessed.

Common Ford issues to check before buying

Brand-specific known issues — useful as a pre-purchase inspection checklist. CheckMyVIN does not flag these per VIN; verify against service history.

3.5L EcoBoost cam phasers / timing chain
2011–2017 F-150, Expedition, Navigator, Edge Sport
First-gen 3.5L EcoBoost engines develop cam phaser rattle on cold start and, in higher-mileage trucks, can stretch the timing chain. Listen for a 1–2 second ticking on startup. Phaser/chain replacement is a $3,000–$5,000 job. The 2017+ revised phaser design largely fixed it.
Spark plug / coil-on-plug failure
5.0L Coyote V8, 3.5L EcoBoost — 60k+ mi
Modular V8s and EcoBoost V6s use coil-on-plug ignition; failed coils cause a miss and a check-engine light. Plugs should be replaced every 60–100k miles depending on engine. On the 5.4L 3V (2004–2008), plug shanks famously break off in the head — that engine is mostly retired now but is still in some used F-150s.
DPS6 PowerShift dual-clutch transmission
2011–2019 Fiesta and 2012–2018 Focus (NOT Focus RS or ST)
Ford's dry-clutch DPS6 dual-clutch was the subject of a multi-million-dollar class action for shuddering, hesitation, and premature clutch failure. Avoid these specific cars unless the transmission was replaced under extended warranty. Other Fords are unaffected.
Frame and tailgate corrosion on northern trucks
2004–2014 F-150, especially Super Crew
Frame rust on northeast / midwest F-150s is common. Check the frame near the rear axle, inside the tailgate skin, and behind the rear wheel arches. Some 2004–2014 trucks were recalled for frame issues; check the recall list in the report.

Ford buyer's notes

F-150 valuations differ widely by engine: 2.7L EcoBoost is the volume seller and reliable; 3.5L EcoBoost has the cam-phaser story above; 5.0L Coyote is the most predictable long-term. Mustang GT and Bronco premiums add 10–20% over equivalent body styles. For Powerstroke diesels, check for DEF system delete (illegal and a value killer) and EGR cooler condition on 6.4L and 6.7L.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decode a Ford F-150 VIN?
The 8th digit of an F-150 VIN encodes engine family (2.7L EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L Coyote, etc.). CheckMyVIN reads this and shows the engine block in plain English plus engine displacement and configuration.
Where is the Ford VIN on a truck?
Three places: dash plate at the base of the windshield (driver side), driver-door jamb certification sticker, and on the title. F-150 and Super Duty trucks also have the VIN stamped on the frame rail behind the front wheel.
How do I check for Ford recalls by VIN?
Ford lookups in CheckMyVIN automatically query NHTSA recall records for the year/make/model. Every open campaign appears in the report with the official 22V-### campaign number and dealer remedy.
Does Ford VIN tell me the assembly plant?
Yes — the 11th digit encodes the plant. NHTSA VPIC returns Plant Country and Plant City directly. F-150s come from Dearborn (MI) or Kansas City (MO); Mustangs from Flat Rock (MI); Broncos from Wayne (MI).
Does CheckMyVIN work for Mustang, Bronco, and Maverick?
Yes — any 17-digit Ford VIN, regardless of model. The report adapts to the body class and powertrain (gas, EcoBoost, hybrid, EV).
Is Mustang Mach-E covered as an EV?
Yes. Mach-E decodes with Electrification Level = BEV and the report switches to the EV view — battery kWh, no oil/spark rows, EV-specific maintenance.
Are Ford GT and Shelby VINs supported?
Any production Ford in the NHTSA VPIC database is supported, including GT, Shelby GT350/GT500, and Raptor variants.
