Recall lookups are model-level — VINs confirm
NHTSA publishes recalls by year, make, and model. Whether a specific vehicle still needs the repair depends on its VIN: the campaign may have been completed by a previous owner, or the vehicle may fall outside the affected production range. To check one vehicle, run its VIN on the homepage — the report lists every open campaign for its year/make/model — then confirm completion status with a franchised dealer, who checks the VIN against the manufacturer's system.
Recall repairs are free by federal law, at any franchised dealer of that brand, regardless of the vehicle's age or how many owners it has had. If a seller tells you an open recall "isn't a big deal," the fix costs you nothing — get it done before the sale closes.
