What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number is the 17-character fingerprint stamped on every car built since 1981. If you're holding a VIN off a listing, an auction sheet, or a shipping document, here's exactly what each character tells you — and what it doesn't.

The 17 characters, one by one

Every VIN packs six pieces of information into a fixed structure defined by ISO 3779 and, for US-market vehicles, 49 CFR Part 565. The example below is a real 2013 Ford F-150 — every character decodes on NHTSA vPIC — broken down position by position:

Country of assembly
The first character is the country/region of assembly. 1 = United States (as here), 4 and 5 also = USA, 2 = Canada, 3 = Mexico, J = Japan, K = Korea, S = United Kingdom, W = Germany, and so on.

With position 1, these form the World Manufacturer Identifier — the code assigned to the maker (1FT = Ford trucks, here). Low-volume makers (under ~2,000 vehicles/year) share a WMI and are further identified by positions 12–14.

Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Encodes model line, body style, restraint system, and engine/drivetrain — using a scheme each manufacturer defines for itself. There is no universal VDS table, so a decoder reads these against the maker’s specification or a database like NHTSA VPIC.

Check digit
A checksum computed from the other 16 characters (ISO 3779) — this VIN’s is 9. It is always a single digit 0–9, or the letter X when the remainder is 10. If it doesn’t match the math, the VIN was mistyped or fabricated.

D = 2013 here. The 10th character encodes the model year on a repeating 30-year cycle that skips the letters I, O, Q, U, Z and the digit 0 to avoid confusion.

The code for the specific factory that built the vehicle (this one was built in Dearborn, USA), defined by the manufacturer.

Production sequence
The serial number — the unique sequence for this exact vehicle as it came down the assembly line. Together with the year and plant it makes the VIN unique.

Positions 1–3: where and who

The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI): character 1 is the country of assembly, characters 2–3 identify the maker. This is why two cars from the same plant share the same first three characters. A full decode against the NHTSA vPIC database turns the WMI into the actual manufacturer name.

Positions 4–8: what the vehicle is

The Vehicle Descriptor Section carries the model line, body style, restraint system, and engine family. Manufacturers each define their own VDS scheme, so there is no single lookup table — this is the part a real decoder resolves against NHTSA data rather than guessing.

Position 9: the check digit

The 9th character is a checksum that catches typos and fabricated VINs. It's the one position you can verify yourself with nothing but arithmetic — verify a VIN's check digit here →. If it fails, stop and recheck the VIN before trusting anything else about it.

Positions 10–17: when, where, and which one

Where to find the VIN

Before you decode anything, make sure you're reading the real VIN off the car — not just what a listing claims. The three authoritative places:

  • Driver-side dashboard, near windshieldStand outside the vehicle on the driver's side and look at the corner of the dashboard where it meets the windshield. The 17-character VIN is engraved on a metal plate visible through the glass.
  • Driver's door jamb stickerOpen the driver's door and look at the door jamb (the frame the door closes against). A federal certification label lists the VIN, tire pressures, and gross vehicle weight rating.
  • Vehicle title, registration & insurance cardThe VIN appears on the title, current registration, and insurance documents. If buying used, cross-check the VIN on the car against every document — any mismatch is a major red flag.

What about older cars? (pre-1981)

The 17-character standard only applies from the 1981 model year. Before that, manufacturers used shorter VINs of varying length and format, with no standardized check digit and no global WMI registry. A pre-1981 VIN can still identify a vehicle, but it won't decode through the modern 17-character rules and often returns limited or no data from NHTSA. For classic cars, the data plate on the firewall or door and marque-specific registries are the authoritative sources.

What a VIN can't tell you

A VIN encodes how the car left the factory — nothing about what happened since. The 17 characters do not contain accident or damage history, title brands (salvage, flood, rebuilt), the odometer reading or rollback, how many owners it has had, or whether the VIN was cloned from another real vehicle. None of that is in the VIN, and none of it is in NHTSA's data either. Frequently asked questions

How many characters is a VIN?

A modern VIN is exactly 17 characters, using digits 0–9 and capital letters — but never I, O, or Q, which are excluded so they aren’t confused with 1 and 0. Vehicles built before the 1981 standard used shorter VINs of varying length.

Where do I find the VIN on a car?

The three reliable places are the driver-side dashboard plate (visible through the windshield from outside), the driver door-jamb certification label, and the title/registration. On a used car, confirm the VIN matches across all of them — a mismatch is a serious red flag.

Can I tell the model year from the VIN?

Does the VIN contain the color, options, or history?

No. The VIN encodes factory build attributes (make, model line, body, engine family, plant, year). It does not contain the paint color, the full option list, or anything about the car’s life after the factory — no accidents, title brands, or mileage. Those come from a decode plus a history report.
