Aprilia VIN Lookup & Buyer's Guide

Aprilia VIN decoder — RSV4, RS 660, Tuono, Caponord, recalls.

About Aprilia

Aprilia VINs start with ZD4 — Aprilia S.p.A., part of the Piaggio Group, building at Scorzè and Noale in Italy's Veneto region. CheckMyVIN decodes the model, displacement, year, and plant from NHTSA VPIC and lists any open recall. Coverage is limited to Aprilias sold or titled in the US — EU-spec gray imports usually won't decode.

Founded 1945 and headquartered in Noale, Italy (Piaggio Group), Aprilia vehicles register their VIN data with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When you enter an Aprilia VIN above, CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA VPIC database directly — pulling the same federally certified specs that the manufacturer reported when the vehicle was sold.

Aprilia uses several WMI codes (ZD4) depending on plant and model line — see the full Aprilia VIN Decoder for the complete table and a per-position walkthrough.

Where to find your Aprilia VIN

  • Steering head (frame, below handlebars)Turn the handlebars to one side and look at the steering head where the frame meets the forks. The 17-character VIN is stamped into the right side of the frame headstock on most Aprilia sport models.
  • Engine case (separate engine number)Aprilia stamps a separate engine serial number on the crankcase. This is NOT the VIN — the frame VIN is the legal identifier.
  • Title, registration & insurance documentsThe 17-character frame VIN appears on the title and registration. Cross-check the frame stamp against every document — track-crashed and rebuilt sportbikes are common in this segment.

What CheckMyVIN shows for Aprilia

Every Aprilia report includes the decoded specifications (engine, drive type, transmission, plant, body class), every open recall NHTSA has on file for the year/model/make combination, an AI-written plain-English summary, and the maintenance specs CheckMyVIN can confidently match by engine code. Tire sizes vary by trim and are always marked "Varies by trim — check door-jamb label" rather than guessed.

New to VIN reading? Start with what each of the 17 characters means, check a suspicious number with the check digit calculator, or look up a model year in the year code table.

Common Aprilia issues to check before buying

Brand-specific known issues — useful as a pre-purchase inspection checklist. CheckMyVIN does not flag these per VIN; verify against service history.

RS 660 / Tuono 660 connecting rod recall
2021 RS 660 and Tuono 660 (NHTSA 21V502000)
Improperly heat-treated connecting rods could break and stall the engine; the remedy was a complete engine replacement, free at Aprilia dealers. On any early 660, confirm the campaign shows closed — a documented replacement engine is nothing to fear (it's effectively a newer engine), but an open recall is a walk-away until fixed.
Sprag (starter) clutch failures on the Rotax V-twins
1998–2010 RSV 1000 Mille / RSV 1000 R and Tuono 1000 (Rotax 60° V-twin)
The classic weak point of the RSV-era twins: the starter sprag clutch can slip or shatter, announced by a loud graunch on startup. Upgraded sprag assemblies exist and many bikes have been fixed. Cold-start the bike several times during inspection; hesitant, noisy starts are the tell.
Charging system margins on V4 models
2009–2016 RSV4 / Tuono V4 generations
Stators and regulator/rectifiers on early V4s run hot and fail more often than average, especially on track-ridden bikes. Symptoms: charge-light flicker, weak hot restarts, or a dead battery after a spirited ride. Check for an upgraded regulator and test charging voltage at the battery on the test ride.
Electrical connectors and sensor gremlins
Shiver / Dorsoduro 750, Caponord, and earlier V4s
Aprilia's ride-by-wire era brought sensitive throttle-position and side-stand sensors plus connector corrosion issues on bikes stored outdoors. Most faults are cheap to fix but tedious to chase. A clean dash (no persistent warning triangles) through a full heat cycle is part of any pre-purchase inspection.
Valve service access and cost on the V4
All RSV4 / Tuono V4 (65° V4)
The V4's valve checks (24,000 km / ~15,000 mi intervals) require significant teardown, so shops quote real money — and neglected checks are common on bikes that changed hands often. Records matter: a documented valve service near the due point is worth paying extra for.

Aprilia buyer's notes

Aprilias reward informed buyers: performance per dollar is exceptional on the used market precisely because the dealer network is thinner than Japanese rivals' and parts can take longer to arrive — factor both into your ownership plan, especially outside metro areas. Mechanically, the priorities by generation are: sprag clutch behavior on RSV/Tuono 1000 twins, charging health and valve-service records on RSV4/Tuono V4s, and recall closure on 2021 660s (a documented replacement engine under 21V502000 is a plus, not a minus). Many Aprilias have track history — inspect for case sliders, drilled fasteners, safety wire, and crash repairs, and match the frame stamp to the title. Insurance quotes vary widely on the V4s; get one before you commit rather than after.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read an Aprilia VIN?
Positions 1-3 are ZD4 — Aprilia S.p.A., Italy. Positions 4-8 encode the model platform (RSV4, RS 660, Tuono, Caponord…), position 10 is the model year, and position 11 the plant. CheckMyVIN reads every field through NHTSA VPIC.
Where is the VIN on an Aprilia?
Stamped into the frame at the steering head — turn the bars and look where the frame meets the forks, usually on the right side. The engine number on the crankcase is a separate serial, not the VIN.
Is Aprilia decoded under Piaggio?
No — Aprilia has its own make record and its own ZD4 WMI in NHTSA VPIC, even though Piaggio Group owns the brand and Piaggio Group Americas files some of its recalls. A Vespa or Piaggio scooter decodes under the separate ZAP WMI.
Does CheckMyVIN show Aprilia recalls?
Yes — every NHTSA-published campaign for your model and year, including the 2021 RS 660 / Tuono 660 connecting rod recall and the Tuono V4 / Caponord front brake master cylinder campaign.
Does this work for Aprilia scooters and small bikes?
US-market Aprilia models registered with NHTSA decode normally. Small-displacement models that were never US-certified (RS 125 two-strokes, most EU-only scooters) generally return no data.
Can the VIN tell an RSV4 Factory from a base RSV4?
Not reliably — VPIC returns the model platform and displacement, but motorcycle trim filings are thin, so Factory / RR / RF distinctions often come back blank. Verify trim through a dealer VIN lookup when it matters to price.
Can I decode a European-market Aprilia that was imported privately?
Usually not. NHTSA VPIC only covers vehicles sold or titled in the US. Gray-import EU-spec Aprilias — common with two-stroke RS 250s and older Tuonos — typically return no data. The VIN is genuine; the US federal record just doesn't contain it.
