How to read a Moto Guzzi VIN

A Moto Guzzi VIN, like any modern road-vehicle VIN, is 17 characters split into three blocks: the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) in positions 1–3, the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) in positions 4–9, and the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) in positions 10–17. Here's a real Moto Guzzi VIN broken down position by position.

PositionCharsMeaning
1Z
Country of origin
Z = Italy. Every Moto Guzzi carries the ZGU prefix — the brand has never series-produced motorcycles anywhere but Mandello del Lario, on the shore of Lake Como, making it one of the simplest WMI stories in motorcycling.
2-3GU
Manufacturer (WMI)
GU completes ZGU = Moto Guzzi S.p.A. It is the single Moto Guzzi WMI in the NHTSA registry, covering everything from 1980s Le Mans and California models through the V7, V9, V85 TT, and V100 Mandello. The model line is encoded in positions 4-8, not the WMI. Parent-group Piaggio and sister brand Aprilia use their own separate WMIs.
4-8KTC02
Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Encodes the model family and engine — for this VIN, VPIC translates it to Model = V11 with the 1064 cc transverse 90° V-twin (a 2004 V11 series bike). Motorcycle manufacturers file lighter VDS detail than car makers, so special-series distinctions (this particular bike is a limited-run V11 Coppa Italia) may not appear in the federal record even when family, displacement, year, and plant decode cleanly.
99
Check digit
A mod-11 checksum computed from the other 16 positions. NHTSA uses it to reject typos before returning a decode — this sample VIN returns ErrorCode 0 ("VIN decoded clean, check digit correct"). If the check digit is wrong, VPIC flags the VIN and CheckMyVIN shows a warning.
104
Model year
4 = 2004. The full year code table is below. The 30-year cycle skips I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion with similar-looking characters. Moto Guzzi adopted the federal 17-character standard for US-market bikes from 1981; earlier loop-frame and Tonti-frame machines carry short serials VPIC cannot decode.
11M
Assembly plant
For this VIN, M maps to Mandello del Lario — VPIC confirms it directly (Plant City = MANDELLO DEL LARIO, Plant Country = ITALY). The factory on Via Parodi has built Moto Guzzis continuously since 1921, and the V100 Mandello is literally named after the town. CheckMyVIN reads Plant City and Plant Country from the VPIC record rather than inferring them from this character.
12-17111290
Production sequence
A 6-digit serial number that increments through the model year at that plant. Not useful on its own, but combined with year and plant it confirms the VIN is internally consistent — useful on limited-series Guzzis where production numbers matter to collectors.

VIN year codes (position 10)

The 10th character of every modern VIN encodes the model year. The cycle skips the letters I, O, Q, U and Z, and the digit 0, to avoid being confused with similar digits. This table covers every model year currently on US roads.

Moto Guzzi WMI codes (positions 1–3)

The first three characters of the VIN identify the manufacturer and country of assembly. Moto Guzzi uses several WMI codes depending on plant and model line.

Moto Guzzi build sheet & options

A full Moto Guzzi build sheet — original paint, special-series designation (Coppa Italia, Rosso Corsa, Centenario), fitted luggage or accessory packages — is not part of the federal NHTSA VPIC dataset. CheckMyVIN can confirm make, model family (V7 / V9 / V85 TT / V100 Mandello and the older California / Griso / Norge / V11 lines), engine displacement, model year, assembly plant, body class, and live NHTSA recall history, but it cannot return the original equipment list. For the delivered spec your authoritative source is a Moto Guzzi dealer, who can pull the vehicle record by VIN through the Piaggio Group dealer system. CheckMyVIN never claims options data it cannot verify against the NHTSA record.

Moto Guzzi VIN decoder FAQ

Is the Moto Guzzi VIN decoder free?
Yes — every Moto Guzzi VIN lookup on CheckMyVIN is free, no signup, no email gate, no usage cap on individual users. Data comes from the public NHTSA VPIC API. The optional "full vehicle history report" link at the bottom of each report is an affiliate to a paid third-party history service; you can ignore it.
How do I decode a Moto Guzzi V7, V85 TT, or V100 VIN?
Enter the 17-character VIN above. Position 1 = country (Z = Italy), positions 2-3 complete ZGU = Moto Guzzi S.p.A., positions 4-8 encode the model family (the worked example decodes to V11, 1064 cc), position 10 = model year (4 = 2004), position 11 = plant (M = Mandello del Lario, confirmed by VPIC). CheckMyVIN reads each field from NHTSA VPIC and shows the recall list for that model and year alongside the spec block.
Why won't my EU-spec Moto Guzzi VIN decode?
Honestly: because it isn't in the US federal database. NHTSA VPIC covers Guzzis certified for the US market — bikes the US importer (today Piaggio Group Americas) brought in, or that were otherwise US-titled. European-market Guzzis brought over privately — a common story with Le Mans models, small-block V35/V50s, and other EU-only variants — usually return no record. The VIN is genuine; the database boundary is real. Your import paperwork and a dealer lookup against the factory system are the reliable sources for those bikes.
Where is the VIN on a Moto Guzzi?
Stamped into the frame at the steering head — turn the handlebars to one side and look at the headstock where the frame meets the forks; many models add a riveted identification plate nearby. The engine number stamped on the transverse V-twin's crankcase is a separate serial used for matching-numbers checks on collectible models — it is NOT the VIN. The frame stamp is the legal identifier and must match the title exactly.
My older Guzzi decodes with sparse data — is the VIN bad?
Probably not. Two honest limitations apply: pre-1981 Guzzis are not in VPIC at all, and even for modern bikes NHTSA's motorcycle records are thinner than car records because two-wheeler filing requirements are lighter. If make, model family, year, and the check digit come back clean — as they do for the 2004 V11 worked example — the VIN is fine; missing trim or special-series fields are a federal data-coverage gap, not a red flag about the bike.
Does the report show Moto Guzzi recalls?
Yes — CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA recall API for the decoded model and year and lists every published campaign. The 2020 V85 TT had two: 19V857000 (final drive output seal could leak oil onto the rear tire — dealers inspect and add or replace seals) and 19V858000 (footrest mounting pin retaining clips could break — dealers inspect all four footrests and replace clips). Both were free dealer fixes filed by Piaggio Group Americas. Recall lists are model-level; a dealer can confirm by VIN whether your specific bike was already remedied.
