My old Polaris snowmobile / ATV has a 7-digit serial — can you decode that?
Honestly: no, not through this tool. The federal 17-character VIN standard came into force in 1981, and Polaris began stamping 17-character VINs on US-market road-legal vehicles from that point — but many older Polaris snowmobiles (pre-1990s) and early ATVs use the company's own 7- or 9-digit chassis number instead. NHTSA VPIC has no record of these shorter Polaris serials and CheckMyVIN cannot decode them. For 7-digit Polaris decoding your best resources are a Polaris dealer (they can look up the chassis number through Polaris's service system going back decades), the Polaris Owner Center, and marque registries like SnoWest (vintage Polaris snowmobiles). Some competitor sites claim to "decode" 7-digit Polaris serials but the output is largely guesswork — be skeptical.

Where is the Polaris VIN located?
On Polaris ATVs and side-by-sides (Ranger / RZR / Sportsman / General): the 17-character VIN is stamped on the frame, usually on the left side rail near the front of the chassis or behind the driver-side rear wheel — look for a metal plate or directly stamped frame number. On Polaris Slingshot: the dash plate at the base of the windshield (driver side, visible from outside) and the driver-door jamb. On Indian Motorcycle: the steering neck (turn the handlebars and look at the frame where it meets the front forks). The engine has its own separate serial number stamped on the case — that is NOT the VIN.
