Lexus VIN Decoder

Lexus VIN decoder — ES, RX, GX, LX, hybrid & RZ EV.

About Lexus

Lexus is Toyota's luxury division — same VIN system, separate model lineup. CheckMyVIN decodes Lexus VINs to engine code, hybrid status, drive type, plant, and pulls every open NHTSA recall in one report.

Founded 1989 and headquartered in Toyota City, Japan, Lexus vehicles register their VIN data with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When you enter a Lexus VIN above, CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA VPIC database directly — pulling the same federally certified specs that the manufacturer reported when the vehicle was sold.

A 17-character VIN is split into three sections: the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) in digits 1–3, the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) in digits 4–9, and the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) in digits 10–17. Lexus uses several WMI codes depending on plant and model line — the table below lists the most common.

Lexus WMI Codes

WMIMeaning
JTHLexus passenger car (ES, IS, LS) — Japan
2T2Lexus SUV (RX) — Cambridge, ON Canada
JTJLexus SUV — Japan
58ALexus passenger (ES) — Georgetown, KY USA

Where to find your Lexus VIN

  • Driver-side dashboard, near windshieldStand outside the vehicle on the driver's side and look at the corner of the dashboard where it meets the windshield. The 17-character VIN is engraved on a metal plate visible through the glass.
  • Driver's door jamb stickerOpen the driver's door and look at the door jamb (the frame the door closes against). A federal certification label lists the VIN, tire pressures, and gross vehicle weight rating.
  • Vehicle title, registration & insurance cardThe VIN appears on the title, current registration, and insurance documents. If buying used, cross-check the VIN on the car against every document — any mismatch is a major red flag.

What CheckMyVIN shows for Lexus

Every Lexus report includes the decoded specifications (engine, drive type, transmission, plant, body class), every open recall NHTSA has on file for the year/model/make combination, an AI-written plain-English summary, and the maintenance specs CheckMyVIN can confidently match by engine code. Tire sizes vary by trim and are always marked "Varies by trim — check door-jamb label" rather than guessed.

Common Lexus issues to check before buying

Brand-specific known issues — useful as a pre-purchase inspection checklist. CheckMyVIN does not flag these per VIN; verify against service history.

2UR-GSE 5.0L V8 carbon buildup
2013+ IS F (last year), LC 500, RC F (no D4-S until 2014+)
Direct-injection 5.0L V8s carbon up on intake valves around 80–120k mi. Walnut blast service $600–$900. Symptom: rough idle, slight power loss. Toyota/Lexus added port injection back to most D4-S engines after 2014 to address this.
Dash and door cracking (high-heat states)
2007–2013 RX, ES, IS, GS sold in Arizona/Florida/Texas
Lexus extended dashboard warranty for cracking in extreme-heat states. Many cars had dashes replaced. Verify if the car has been in a southern state.
8-speed AA80E transmission torque-converter shudder
2014–2017 IS 350, GS 350, RC 350
Low-speed shudder under light throttle. Software updates addressed most cases; some required torque converter replacement. Test drive at 30–45 mph light throttle.
V35A 3.5L twin-turbo V6 turbo wastegate rattle
2018+ LS 500, LC 500, LX 600 with V35A
Wastegate rattle on light throttle. Toyota issued an updated wastegate. Cosmetic but distracting; verify whether the updated part was installed.

Lexus buyer's notes

Lexus depreciation lags Mercedes/BMW — used examples are pricier but lower-risk. LX, GX, and the 4Runner-platform GX 460 hold value extraordinarily well. Hybrid Lexus models share Toyota hybrid traction batteries; verify warranty status. CPO program is excellent and extends 2 years over basic warranty.
