Mazda VIN Lookup & Buyer's Guide

Free Mazda VIN decoder — Mazda3, CX-5, MX-5, Skyactiv engines, recalls.

About Mazda

Mazda builds most of its cars in Japan (Hiroshima, Hofu), with the Mazda3 and CX-30 in Mexico and the CX-50 in Huntsville, Alabama. A Mazda VIN reveals the model, assembly plant, engine family (Skyactiv-G gas, Skyactiv-D diesel, the 2.5L turbo, or the older MZR), body class, and every open NHTSA recall. CheckMyVIN runs the full lookup in about 30 seconds, free.

Founded 1920 and headquartered in Hiroshima, Japan, Mazda vehicles register their VIN data with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When you enter a Mazda VIN above, CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA VPIC database directly — pulling the same federally certified specs that the manufacturer reported when the vehicle was sold.

Mazda uses several WMI codes (JM1, JM3, 3MZ, and more) depending on plant and model line — see the full Mazda VIN Decoder for the complete table and a per-position walkthrough.

Where to find your Mazda VIN

  • Driver-side dashboard, near windshieldStand outside the vehicle on the driver's side and look at the corner of the dashboard where it meets the windshield. The 17-character VIN is engraved on a metal plate visible through the glass.
  • Driver's door jamb stickerOpen the driver's door and look at the door jamb (the frame the door closes against). A federal certification label lists the VIN, tire pressures, and gross vehicle weight rating.
  • Vehicle title, registration & insurance cardThe VIN appears on the title, current registration, and insurance documents. If buying used, cross-check the VIN on the car against every document — any mismatch is a major red flag.

What CheckMyVIN shows for Mazda

Every Mazda report includes the decoded specifications (engine, drive type, transmission, plant, body class), every open recall NHTSA has on file for the year/model/make combination, an AI-written plain-English summary, and the maintenance specs CheckMyVIN can confidently match by engine code. Tire sizes vary by trim and are always marked "Varies by trim — check door-jamb label" rather than guessed.

Common Mazda issues to check before buying

Brand-specific known issues — useful as a pre-purchase inspection checklist. CheckMyVIN does not flag these per VIN; verify against service history.

Skyactiv-G direct-injection carbon buildup
2012+ Mazda3, CX-5, CX-30, Mazda6 (Skyactiv-G 2.0/2.5)
Like most direct-injected engines, Skyactiv-G motors can accumulate carbon on the intake valves over time (no port fuel to wash them), eventually causing rough idle, misfires, or reduced power. It is a maintenance item, not a defect — periodic walnut-blast cleaning resolves it. Keep up with oil changes and consider an occasional intake cleaning on higher-mileage cars.
2.3L DISI turbo (Mazdaspeed / CX-7) issues
2006–2013 Mazdaspeed3, Mazdaspeed6, CX-7 (2.3L DISI turbo)
The turbocharged 2.3L DISI is more fragile than the naturally aspirated Mazdas: turbo failures, timing-chain and VVT wear, and high-pressure-fuel-pump issues are common, especially if oil changes were stretched. A Mazdaspeed without a documented maintenance history is higher-risk; check for boost issues and oil consumption.
Takata airbag inflator recall
Older Mazda6, RX-8, CX-7, CX-9, B-Series (model-year dependent)
Mazda is part of the industry-wide Takata recall: certain inflators can rupture and propel metal fragments. This is safety-critical and the repair is free. Always run the VIN through the recall lookup and confirm any Takata campaign was completed before buying an older Mazda.
Rear wheel-arch and subframe rust
2004–2009 Mazda3 and Mazda6 in salt-belt states
Earlier Mazda3/Mazda6 bodies were prone to rust at the rear wheel arches and, more seriously, the rear subframe/suspension mounts in road-salt regions. On an older Mazda from a snowy state, inspect the wheel arches and have the subframe checked — structural rust there is an MOT/safety concern, not just cosmetic.

Mazda buyer's notes

Mazdas are generally reliable and fun to drive; the main used-buy notes are direct-injection carbon buildup on Skyactiv engines (a maintenance item, helped by walnut blasting), and extra caution on the 2.3L DISI turbo Mazdaspeed/CX-7 cars, which need a documented maintenance history. Confirm any Takata airbag campaign and the model-specific recalls (2018-2019 CX-5/Mazda6 engine-stall, 2019-2020 Mazda3 AEB) are closed. On a salt-belt 2004-2009 Mazda3/6, check the rear arches and subframe for rust. A Mazda dealer can pull the service history from the VIN.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decode a Mazda CX-5 or Mazda3 VIN?
Enter the 17-character VIN above. CheckMyVIN reads it through the official NHTSA VPIC database and returns model, model year, body class, engine, assembly plant, drive type, and any open recalls. It works for any Mazda in NHTSA records — Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-30, CX-5, CX-50, CX-9, CX-90, and the MX-5 Miata.
Where is the VIN on a Mazda?
Three places: the dash plate at the base of the windshield (driver side, visible through the glass), the driver-door jamb certification label, and the title/registration. Most Mazdas are Japan-built (VIN starts with JM); the Mazda3/CX-30 (Mexico) start with 3M and the CX-50 (Alabama) starts with 7M.
How do I check for Mazda recalls by VIN?
Every Mazda lookup on CheckMyVIN automatically queries NHTSA recall records for the year/make/model and lists each open campaign with its official NHTSA campaign number and the dealer remedy. The full Mazda recall page is at /mazda/recall.
How do I read the Mazda engine from a VIN (Skyactiv)?
NHTSA VPIC returns the engine displacement and configuration; most modern Mazdas use Skyactiv-G gasoline engines (2.0L, 2.5L, and the 2.5L turbo), with Skyactiv-D diesel and the older MZR on earlier cars. CheckMyVIN shows it in the Vehicle Specifications block.
Is the Mazda built in Japan, Mexico, or the US?
It depends on the model. The first VIN character tells you: J = Japan (most Mazdas — Hiroshima/Hofu), 3 = Mexico (Mazda3 and CX-30 from Salamanca/Guanajuato), and 7 = USA (the CX-50 from Huntsville, Alabama). CheckMyVIN also shows the exact Plant City and Country from the VPIC record.
Does CheckMyVIN work for the MX-5 Miata and the rotary RX-8?
Yes — any 17-character Mazda VIN, regardless of model. The MX-5 Miata decodes normally; the rotary RX-8 (and older RX-7) decode where they are in the NHTSA database, though very old rotary cars predate the modern 17-character VIN (see the old-VIN question on the decoder page).
