Genesis VIN Lookup & Buyer's Guide

Genesis VIN decoder — G70, G80, G90, GV70, GV80, GV60.

About Genesis

Genesis is the standalone luxury brand of the Hyundai Motor Group (launched in 2015), and CheckMyVIN decodes every US-market Genesis: model line (G70, G80, G90 sedans and GV60, GV70, GV80 SUVs, plus the Electrified G80 / GV70 EVs), engine family, drive type, assembly plant (Ulsan, South Korea), model year, and any open NHTSA recall — all pulled live from the official NHTSA VPIC database.

Founded 2015 and headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, Genesis vehicles register their VIN data with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When you enter a Genesis VIN above, CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA VPIC database directly — pulling the same federally certified specs that the manufacturer reported when the vehicle was sold.

Genesis uses several WMI codes (KMT, KMU, KMH) depending on plant and model line — see the full Genesis VIN Decoder for the complete table and a per-position walkthrough.

Where to find your Genesis VIN

  • Driver-side dashboard, near windshieldStand outside the vehicle on the driver's side and look at the corner of the dashboard where it meets the windshield. The 17-character VIN is engraved on a metal plate visible through the glass.
  • Driver's door jamb stickerOpen the driver's door and look at the door jamb (the frame the door closes against). A federal certification label lists the VIN, tire pressures, and gross vehicle weight rating.
  • Vehicle title, registration & insurance cardThe VIN appears on the title, current registration, and insurance documents. If buying used, cross-check the VIN on the car against every document — any mismatch is a major red flag.

What CheckMyVIN shows for Genesis

Every Genesis report includes the decoded specifications (engine, drive type, transmission, plant, body class), every open recall NHTSA has on file for the year/model/make combination, an AI-written plain-English summary, and the maintenance specs CheckMyVIN can confidently match by engine code. Tire sizes vary by trim and are always marked "Varies by trim — check door-jamb label" rather than guessed.

Common Genesis issues to check before buying

Brand-specific known issues — useful as a pre-purchase inspection checklist. CheckMyVIN does not flag these per VIN; verify against service history.

3.3L twin-turbo oil-feed pipe & ABS-module recalls
2019-2022 G70 / G80 / G90 with the 3.3T; 2019-2021 G70 (ABS)
Two safety recalls stand out on early Genesis models: the 3.3L twin-turbo oil-feed-pipe recall (24V191000), where a leaking pipe near hot components is a fire risk, and the G70 ABS-module recall (21V161000), an electrical short that can cause an engine-bay fire. Both are free repairs — confirm they were completed and, on an affected car, that it was parked outdoors per the interim guidance until fixed.
GDI carbon buildup & turbo maintenance
Turbocharged 2.0T / 2.5T / 3.3T direct-injection engines
Like other direct-injection turbo engines, Genesis fours and V6s can accumulate intake-valve carbon over time and are sensitive to oil quality and change intervals. Confirm a documented oil-service history with the correct spec, check for rough idle or misfire codes, and look for any oil/coolant leaks on the turbo plumbing.
Smaller dealer network & parts availability
All Genesis (newer standalone brand)
Genesis is a young brand with fewer dedicated retailers than established luxury makes, so service and some parts can mean a longer drive or wait depending on your area. This is an ownership-logistics consideration rather than a reliability one — the cars themselves are generally well-regarded. Check that a Genesis service point is reasonably accessible before buying.
Infotainment & software glitches
2019+ G70 / G80 / GV80 with the latest infotainment
Some owners report infotainment lag, Bluetooth/CarPlay drops, and occasional software faults, generally improved with dealer updates. On a test drive exercise the screen, connected services, and driver-assist features, and confirm the latest software was applied.

Genesis buyer's notes

Genesis cars are well-built and strong value used, but check a few things. On 3.3L twin-turbo models confirm the oil-feed-pipe recall (24V191000) is closed; on a 2019-2021 G70 confirm the ABS-module recall (21V161000) is closed — both are fire-risk safety items. Confirm oil-service history on the turbo engines and watch for carbon-buildup symptoms. The standalone Genesis brand dates only to 2015-2016, so an older "Hyundai Genesis" (2009-2016) is a Hyundai, not a Genesis — decode the VIN to see which Make NHTSA returns. Genesis carries the Hyundai Group's long warranty (5 yr / 60k basic, 10 yr / 100k powertrain when new); confirm remaining coverage and transferability from the in-service date. Factor in the smaller dealer network for service. A Genesis retailer can pull the build and service history from the VIN. Decode the VIN first to confirm model, engine, and drive type before negotiating.

Frequently asked questions

Which Genesis models does CheckMyVIN decode?
Every US-market Genesis in NHTSA VPIC: the G70, G80, and G90 sedans, the GV60, GV70, and GV80 SUVs, and the Electrified G80 / Electrified GV70 EVs. Enter any 17-character Genesis VIN and the report returns model, trim, engine, plant, year, and recalls.
Is Genesis part of Hyundai?
Genesis is the standalone luxury division of the Hyundai Motor Group, spun off in 2015 (US sales began in 2016). It shares some Hyundai/Kia engineering but is its own marque — a Genesis VIN returns Make = GENESIS in NHTSA VPIC. Hyundai files Genesis recalls under Hyundai Motor America.
I have an older "Hyundai Genesis" — does it decode as Genesis?
No — the 2009-2016 Hyundai Genesis sedan and the Genesis Coupe were Hyundai models (Make = HYUNDAI, KMH WMI), built before the standalone brand existed. They decode on our Hyundai page. Only 2017-and-later vehicles from the standalone brand return Make = GENESIS.
Where is the Genesis VIN located?
Driver-side dash at the base of the windshield (visible from outside), the driver door-jamb certification sticker, and on the title / registration. The Genesis Intelligent Assistant / MyGenesis app also shows the VIN under vehicle details.
Are the Genesis EVs (GV60, Electrified G80 / GV70) supported?
Yes — the GV60 and the Electrified G80 and GV70 decode with Electrification Level = BEV and the report switches to the EV view (battery details, no oil / spark rows). They pull live NHTSA recall data like any other Genesis.
How do I check Genesis recalls?
CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA recall API live on every report (Hyundai files Genesis campaigns under Hyundai Motor America). Notable examples include a G70 ABS-module fire-risk recall and a 3.3L turbo oil-feed-pipe recall. See the Genesis recall page, then run your VIN.
How long is the Genesis warranty?
Genesis carries the Hyundai Group's long warranty — a 5 yr / 60k mi new-vehicle and 10 yr / 100k mi powertrain warranty when new (EV battery 10 yr / 100k mi). These are shown in the EV maintenance notes when applicable; confirm transferability and remaining coverage from the in-service date.
